That's quite a long train ride from Hamburg to Varberg. This is the ferry port to Grenaa in Denmark from where the E1 continues south. I choose the train via Copenhagen including the ferry from Puttgarden to Rödby Havn. After eight hours including a mad dash to get the connection in Copenhagen did I arrive in Varberg. The youth hostel is well outside of town. Following some inquiry did I get the bus taking me to near the hostel. From the bus stop I was picked up by the hostel warden.
It started raining during the night. This meant getting into my rain clothes and off I went. I had breakfast at a large COOP shop situated on the southern outskirts of Varberg and right on my way to the route to Akulla. As this part of E1 follows the route of the former railroad from Varberg to Kinnared;there are no real ascents. Soon after crossing the motorway the paved part stops and it continues on gravel and sand. The weather became better allowing viewing the pylons onf the radio station Grimetons. It is in operation since 1924. Just short of Akulla crosses the Hallandsleden. I had lunch at Akulla. Back at the crossing of paths I entered the Hallandsleden. Now I walked on well marked dirt trails through forests. In between the E1 follows active and former forest roads. Again and again there are nice view points. Late in the evening I arrived at the rest area Gällarpesjön. Here I found my first shelter in Sweden. The shelter was almost like the ones I know from the Appalachian Trail; three walls, a roof and at knee height a wooden floor. Here I could roll out my mattress and sleeping bag for the night.
