This path runs on the west side of Mallorca in the Serra de Tramuntana. It is planned to connect Port Andratx in the southwest with Pollenca in the northeast with a total length of about 150 km. The southwesterly section between Port d'Andratx and Valdemossa is not yet marked as GR 221. Dicussions with landlords for right of passage are still ongoing. The path is planned as a Route from hostel (Refugio) to the next hostel. Five of the eight planned hostels are in operation. A sixth at La Trapa is under construction with unknown completion date. The final two hostels at Estellencs and Esporles are still in the planning stages. Even so it is not completely marked the path can be walked in its total length. These are the planned eight sections from hostel to hostel:
- Etappe Port d'Andratx – Sant Elm – La Trapa
- Etappe La Trapa – Coll de sa Gramola – Estellencs
- Etappe Estellencs – Banyalbufar – Esporles
- Etappe Esporles – Valldemossa – Refugio Can Boi, Deià
- Etappe Refugio Can Boi – Refugio Muleta, Port de Sóller
- Etappe Herberge Muleta – Sóller – Biniaraix – Cúber – Refugio Tossals Verds
- Etappe Refugio Tossals Verds – Refugio Son Amer, Lluc
- Etappe Refugio Son Amer – Refugio Pont Romà, Pollenca
My tour guide was the "Rother Wanderführer Mallorca ISBN 3-7633-4122-6". The path descriptions and map cut outs together with the actual path markings are sufficient to follow the path. The latest issue includes the GR 221 as one path and not only comments here and there.
I have completed the following sections:
- Soller to Embassement de Cuber (Road C-710) and return with side trip to top of L'Ofre
- Embassement de Cuber (Road C-710) to Monastry and Refugio Son Amer in Lluc
