Heringsdorf
Ahlbeck 3 km
Swinemünde 4 km
I wasn't in a hurry today. First thing I went to the railway station of Heringsdorf. As I planned to get home from Swinoujscie / Swinemünde with the railway Usedomer Bäderbahn and no one could tell me whether I could pay the train ride in Euro from Poland this seemed to be the safest bet. It was not necessary; I could have paid in Euro. Soon I arrived at the border. What a difference to 1979 when I stood on the Polish side of the border. Then I had no chance of crossing the border into GDR. Now the border is only noticeable by a sign and a forest clear cut. The path just goes on; only the marking changes. From here to the Russian border in East Prussia it is always white-red-white. I walked along the beach until arriving at the spa centre near the coast. I continued along the river Oder until arriving at the ferry crossing. Another day I wanted to get to the other side to walk through Poland. When I arrived at the station after passing through the centre of town the train was already waiting.
Here the E9 crosses the German - Polish border
