Following a peaceful night in the forest near E1 on Strada Alta high above river Ticino I attempted to get near the start of the climb to St. Gotthard Pass. I started off with a cloudy sky. Later the sun came out. So it wasn't so hot early on. The trail continued going uphill in the forest. In Sobrio I passed through the first village. From here on there is a paved road running parallel to E1. This road connects the small villages. Past Calonico I stopped for lunch. In Tengia I ran across an interesting bus stop. The stop was roofed and included a small library.
From the trail I had again and again nice views of the valley below and the mountains beyond. The trail has many short ups and downs. Here too every village has its fountain. Just not in Freggio, the last village of todays hike. I had to use my water filter for the first time. Along the E1 I saw cattle, a few donkeys and finally a few Lamas. Towards evening I had on a steep slope an equally steep ascent. I found a reasonable site for the night. During the day I met very few hikers.
Still in the shadow of mountains I walked through Sobrio early in the morning
E1 follows these stairs
Next winter is coming for sure.
View across Ticino Valley towards Chironico and mountain Pizzo Barone
Church San Giovanni in Anzonico
This bus stop in Tenia is a public library too
