E1 Norway Lønsstua - Storlien

Ic.25    Section Kjennvasshytta - Umbukta 28 km

I left very early and well before the others got up. Soon after leaving the hut I had to cross River Oksfjellelva. Luckily there was a hiker bridge across. Without it it would have been very difficult getting to the other side. Then the trail cuts across a peninsular before reaching the shore of Lake Gresvatnet again. Due to the low water level the lake had a wide beach which I followed as it allowed for much easier hiking then the trail would have. Before arriving at the end the beach stopped and I had to climb up to the trail. Eventually it arrived at the lakes dam. Here I could have gone across the dam as a short cut but decided to follow the markings along a road. Having turned onto another gravel road I arrived at the signpost for the trail to Umbukta. Now the trail runs across Storskardet to Lake Storakersvatnet.

The trail follows the Lake high above its shore. In the strong wind I took cover behind a large rock and set up my tarp for lunch. That was an adventure as the wind was quite gusty wildly flapping the tarp. It held and I could cook my lunch. I should have continued hiking as half an hour later I arrived at Grasfjellkoia a small bad weather hut. I went inside to warm up as the two German hikers had fired up the wood burning stove. Eventually I had to move on. Once the trail changes directions to lead northerly again it became rather difficult to hike. It follows the flank of Mountain Skukkenrøysa and later Mountain Rundfjellet. Here it went across every little ridge coming down from the mountains. This meant constant ups and downs with often missing trail and markings only.

Finally I arrived at Lake Umbukta and soon at the village Umbukta. When I arrived at the Fjellstation it was shortly before they stopped providing meals. They gave me the last available room and after a quick shower I had a nice big dinner. Here we were five hikers for the night. Two moved on next morning while I had to get a ride into Mo-I-Rama for my re-supply. An owner's friend went into town and gave me a lift. There is a huge supermarket in a smaller shopping mall. Here I even got a new pair of socks as another one had worn out. Later he drove me back to Umbukta.
