E1 Sweden from Sälen to Storlien

IIa.7 Section Grövelsjön - Storrödtjärnstugan 26 km

Having bought food for the hike to Storlien at Grövelsjön my back pack was quite heavy. The trail started with a steep ascent from Grövelsjön up to Långfjället. The weather had changed completely over night. There where clouds with a strong wind and it was a lot cooler. I had to wear my jacket for the first time. Until Lake Hävlingen the trail crosses the open treeless Långfjället, is well marked and easy to hike. The last stretch before arriving at the lake became a challenge. It consisted of big rocks only. Every step had to be considered carefully. It was very slow walking and it needed some imagination to call it a trail.

At Lake Hävlingen there was a boat slip so that boats can be moved from the lake to river Storan which merges into River Österdalälven at the town of Idre. This allows for long boat tours down the river. I had lunch at the lake and then climbed up to the next fjell. In the evening I arrived at Storrödtjärnstugan. I was the only hiker for the night. This shelter has a caretaker, a volunteer staying for several weeks maintaining the shelter. It has several bunk rooms with four bunks each. They are equipped with mattresses, rather warm blankets and pillows. All I needed was a thin hostel sleeping bag. The living room has a kitchen complete with gas stove, pots and pans, crockery and cutlery. As there was no mobile phone coverage I had to pay cash.
