Elmshorn
Kollmar 15 km
Glückstadt 16 km
Today was the first really warm day this year and I was to make good use of it. I used the train to get to Elmshorn. After passing through the main pedestrian street I arrived at the harbour. Towards the end of low tide there was more mud than water to be seen. Bridge construction forced me to a short bypass through a shopping centre parking lot; but thereafter the path really started. The first steps let through the river Krückau marsh land and then I arrived at the dyke. Until Glückstadt the E9 follows this dyke and later the river Elbe dyke. Due to the many sheep the dike grass is well trimmed and easy to walk. Many gates have to be crossed or stepped through. Except for a section along river Elbe no major road is near the dike. Subsequently it was a nice and quite walk. Many houses are build near the dike and I could look into the back yards. Until arriving at river Elbe near Kollmar I was the only walker / hiker at all. Along the river Elbe it became more crowded. A paved path in the dyke foreland attracted many cyclists and skaters. Glückstadt can be seen from quite a distance. Directly at the harbour locks I entered the nicely maintained town. Just before the locks is the newly build youth hostel. After a short stretch along the river Elbe dyke the ferry pier is reached. Eventually I went to the station to return home by train.
