Appalachian Trail (AT)

6    Pennsylvania         230 miles / 367 km

In Pennsylvania is the half way point of the entire Appalachian Trail. There is a column at a fixed point. Due to slight trail relocations almost every year it is not the exact middle of the trail. But who cares. In this state I spent a very warm time.

Furnace Store every hiker can take part in the "Half Gallon Challenge". In a time as short as possible half a gallon of ice cream must be digested. I felt this would be too much. I had some ice cream but definitely not half a gallon. There are some hikers who take on this challenge. And a few make it.

I arrived at Duncannon on 4th of July. Here in town everyone meets at the storied Doyle. This Hotel is located directly along the trail. I got the last room available for the night. In the evening we had the opportunity to watch fireworks in Harrisburg. A nice trail angel drove to the other side of Susquehanna river. That was a nice evening.

In Port Clinton I staid at the local pavilion. It is adjacent to a thoroughfare. Using ear plugs I had a restful night. Next morning I found out that my food package had not arrived at the post office. There are no shops in town. Everything was closed down. So I had to walk to Hamburg. Here I could buy food for the next few days. This section was rather dry and had only a limited number of water sources. A few days later I arrived in the next state.

Many hikers rename Pennsylvania into Rocksylvania. The AT is rather rocky and one needs to watch ones feet most of the time.
