I got up very early on an April Sunday morning for travelling by ICE to Osnabrück. Plenty of party people were after a night in town on their way home. When arriving in Osnabrück it was cloudy while a few rain drops fell. It was cold and I had to wear my down jacket for a while. My first target was the Hermannsdenkmal (Herrmanns Monument). Here a bunch of sports car drivers were racing around. Otherwise due to the early Sunday hours not much else happened. Following a short look at the winner Hermann (Arminius) over the roman commander Varus in the year 9 I moved on. The trail follows more or less the crest of Egge Mountains. To get to Eagle Roost Berlebeck as well as the community Externstein the crest is left. The path E1 passes directly by the Externsteine. Here I met many day hikers. Around lunch the sun showed up and the sky got completely blue. For lunch I cooked my first warm meal. During the afternoon I only encountered cyclists. Finally I arrived in time at the Hostel in Bad Driburg. I was the only hiker and got the only available room. Dinner was waiting for me. All other rooms were occupied by a large French school class.
